And Then There Were None is written in 1939 by Agatha Christie, who is considered to be one of the most famous detective writers of all times. The book was a raring success which told the story of 10 people being invited mysteriously to an island. It is after the first meal, the people realize that they have actually been lured to their imminent deaths as one by one the guests start dying. |
The reason for the island guests to be condemned to death was a simple one. Each one of them had committed some crime or the other, and still managed to escape punishment. The book is definitely very intriguing as the guests are killed one by one even though they survivors cannot find a trace of another person on the island. The deaths occur in the same manner as in the nursery rhyme Ten Little Indians.
The entire book is so interesting that it would be difficult to put it down once your start reading. It is full of suspense and intrigue. In fact, one has to marvel at the smartness of the killer and the way he or she commits the murder. Even a ingenious reader will find it difficult to guess the identity of the killer. However, towards the end, the killer reveals himself and confesses to the murders, but still he is not caught, arrested and tried for the murders.
Agatha Christie takes real pain to construct the suspense very cleverly. In fact, this is a hallmark in all her books. The murders occur at regular intervals and the reader is left on the edge anticipating one each time he turns the page. Each guest is a suspect, and there is nothing the reader can do other than continue reading to discover the identity of the killer.
This book is definitely worth reading, twice if you read it a long time ago. It is one of those detective novels that you would find hard to let go once you start reading. So, remember to read it at a time and place when you have no other pressing obligations.
The killer is very clever, and it would take an ingenious reader to guess his identity correctly. Even the detectives in the book are stumped, and it finally takes the killer to confess his crime, but is not caught.
The suspense is also cleverly constructed, and one is left biting one’s nails with the regularity of the murders. Each guest knows that doom is near as there is a copy of the poem posted in everyone’s room. You may not believe that such things could happen and yet, you cannot put the book down. If you have not read the book or if it has been a long time since you read it, take the book and read it. It is definitely worth it.
