Criticism On A Tale Of Two Cities

Today, A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens is considered to be a classic that everyone should read. The story is set during the French Revolution and shows how the characters in the book are affected by it and what the Revolution does to their lives.

However, when the book was first published, it faced a lot of criticism. The book was not accepted as many thought that the story was weak and trivial.

The book is about a French aristocrat Charles Darnay, Lucie Manette Darnay's wife and British barrister Sydney Carton. Darnay, being an aristocrat, gets imprisoned during the Revolution and is sentenced to death. However, Lucie, his wife, starts trying everything possible to rescue him. But, ultimately it is Sydney Carton, who greatly resembles Darnay, who helps Lucie to rescue her husband from the guillotine because he loves her.

The book also highlights the tension between Britain and France.

The main protagonists of the book are Carton and Lucie. The book shows Carton as a cynical barrister, who is ruthless and does not appreciate finer things in life. However, his love for Lucie saves him and he ends up sacrificing his life for Darnay, who definitely is not worth it. However, since Lucie loves her husband, and Carton loves Lucie, it makes the sacrifice worthwhile.

By the end of the book, Carton comes out as a man with character and strong nature, something that readers will not see during the initial stages of the book.

With all its criticism and the drubbing it got, A Tale of Two Cities is definitely worth reading. It will convince people that the power of love is supreme in this world, and nothing can stop it.
