Dream Of The Red Chamber Book Review

The Dream of The Red Chamber written by Chinese novelist Cao Xuepin is a literary masterpiece. It is considered to be one of the four great classical novels to emerge from China. The book was written way back in the 18th century during Qing Dynasty.

The book has many characters, and most of them are women. This book is written in a semi-autobiographical style and pays tribute to women in the author's life who were friends, family and servants.

The term Red Chamber refers to the sheltered chambers where daughters of wealthy Chinese families used to live. It is a term that used even today.

The book is about two rich and wealthy families belonging to the powerful Jia clan. The story highlights the wealth and prestige of these two families and their eventual fall. There 30 main characters in the book along with 400 minor ones. This itself makes the book a saga.

Because the original book was written in Chinese, in the English translation, there are some textual problems. Nonetheless, the story is engrossing, and the love triangle within the story is takes place against the backdrop of the diminishing fortune of the Jia family.

A point here to be noted is that Cao definitely had a sense of humor. The name of the main family in the story is a homophone for a Chinese character, which means fictitious. Some experts believe by using this homophone, Cao was actually trying to portray his family or was trying to tell his readers that he wanted his family to be like the one in the story.
