How Should We Then Live Book Review ?

How Should We Then Live is a book on how history influenced Western culture and civilization. Through the book, the author, Francis A. Schaffer, has shown how theology and philosophy play an important role in the outcome of the culture we have today.

The book starts with the philosophy of Aristotle and Plato. The ancient Roman philosophy played a big role in how people of that time started perceiving life. Of course, we need to give a lot of credit to Aristotle and his philosophical views as they became the basis for scientific methods of the future.

The next part of the book tackles the Middle Ages, and highlights how the Church became a dominant force to reckon with and the way the Biblical truth was misinterpreted by the Church.

Then comes the Renaissance period where humanity saw the birth of humanism and nature was praised. However, according to the book, the same humanism undervalued the importance of mankind.

This is followed by the Reformation period where man breaks free of the clutches of the Church, but still retains his belief in the Bible and the values preached by the Bible. Here the roles of Martin Luther King and William Tyndale are also highlighted.

Schaeffer also covers the eras of Enlightenment, Modern Science, Philosophy, Theology, Art, Music, Literature, and Films and the effect of these eras on mankind.

In the final chapter, Schaeffer pleads with man to turn from self-centeredness to God.

The book is written after Schaeffer spent 40 years researching into philosophy and theology, and their effect on mankind, history and sociology. He has highlighted how slowly our society has degenerated with time.

This book is worth reading if you are interested in society and civilization.
