The Little Red Book by Mao Zedong was first published during the Great Cultural Revolution that took place in China from 1966 to 1976. The book is actually entitled Quotations of Chairman Mao Zedong, but got its name from the western world. |
During the Revolution, around 5 billion copies of the book were printed. The number of copies printed was astonishing given the fact that the world population was around 3 billion. It was mandatory for every Chinese to have a copy of the book.
In the west, the book was published in a pocket-size edition with the name The Little Red Book.
As part of the Cultural Revolution, it was mandatory for schools to teach the book to all students. Even workplaces advocated it. The Chinese people had to study the book and then apply it to different aspects of life. It was believed that if a person could understand the quotations of Mao, the person would be enlightened, and this, in turn, would bring about an improvement in the productivity.
The quotations are organized into topics. One set of quotes deal with a particular topic and then moves on to the next set of quotes that deals with a different topic. In total, there are around 427 quotations in the book.
The book culminates by encouraging people to understand not just the quotes but also the philosophy advocated by Lenin and Marx. It is interesting to note that as per the book, women were to be treated as equal. This is believed to be because majority of the workforce was comprised of women. Also, the book highlights that ways should be sought to alleviate the burdens carried by women.
