Sweetness At The Bottom Of The Pie Book Review

Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie is an enjoyable and witty book written by Alan Bradley. Even though this is Bradley's first novel, he has managed to write in an original manner capturing the essence of life during the post-war period.

The story is about a 11-year old girl, who ends up becoming a detective in order to investigate the mysterious death of a man. The dead man was found in the vegetable garden of the little girl's house. In fact, the girl had witnessed the man dying, but instead of getting afraid and frightened, she ends up getting excited about the entire incident.

The girl's name is Flavia de Luce, and her main obsession is poison. She wants to grow up and become a chemist some day. She is constantly experimenting with poisons and testing them on her elder sisters, who are quite mean in a sisterly way to her.

The story really becomes interesting when Flavia's father is arrested on the suspicion of murdering the man found in the garden. It is then that the father decides to take his 11-year old daughter into confidence and tells her about a story that occurred in his life decades ago. It is this story that holds the key to solving the murder.

Flavia knows without a doubt that her father is innocent and is being framed for the murder. So, it becomes her ambition to prove her father innocent of the crime. During this process, Flavia even ends up meeting with the King of England.

The book is extremely fast paced and you will not be bored for even a moment. The characters are endearing and the way they are woven into the story is outstanding. You will definitely enjoy reading this book without a doubt.
