The Mayan Magician And Other Stories Book Review

The Mayan Magician and Other Stories is a book containing a whole lot of short stories written by Jim Musgrave. The first story, of course, is the Mayan Magician, which is a story about a Mayan girl named Isabel Velasquez, also known as Dipsie Izzie because of her outstanding knuckleball. The sleigh of her hand is so good that she completely wins over fans, male baseball players and skeptics. She ends up getting a contract for a minor league team, and then goes on to become the first female Major League pitcher for the San Diego Padres.

Musgrave uses his finesse and expertise as a writer to interweave a connection between the sport of baseball and ancient Mayan culture. Even people who have no knowledge of baseball will enjoy this story as they travel with Dipsie on her journey of acquiring name, fame and fortune, and finally meeting the true love of her life.

In the 'other stories' of the book, one can once again witness Musgrave's satire, humor and penchant for genius. He covers many genres through the story from greed to political corruption to faith, horror and cyber-sex.

If you are a lover of short stories that provide good entertainment while still being thought provoking, the Mayan Magician and Other Stories is just the book for you. One thing is for sure that the reader will definitely not be disappointed by the quality of the stories. In fact, you will be amazed by the black widow, who uses the internet not only to have sex but also to feast; or you will think twice the next time you see a hurricane as Musgrave's hurricane has nearly human-like qualities. Similarly, other characters in each story etch their own identity and idiosyncrasies.
