When the Nazis Came to Skokie is a real life story that shook America in the late 1970s. The incidents that happened in Skokie has been retold by Philippa Strum through this book. The book is a must read as the events that took place raised a lot of questions in America about freedom of speech and the First Amendment that guarantees freedom of speech. |
Skokie is a suburb of Chicago, and during the late 1970s, nearly all the Jewish people living there were either holocaust survivors or were related to holocaust survivors. These people came to the US looking to leave behind the horrors that they had witnessed in Europe, and all they wanted to do was live in peace. However, these peaceful lives were shattered when a group of neo-Nazi announced that they were going to hold a parade in Skokie. This led to a whole lot of events unfolding that captured the attention of the entire United States.
While the neo-Nazi claimed that they were exercising their freedom of speech, the Jewish people stated that they were entitled to lead a live without being intimidated. The town was embroiled in violence and the settlers were able to get able to get a court injunction to stop the neo-Nazis from holding the parade. However, the American Civil Liberties Union took up the case of the Nazis and won it as right to free speech.
Strum's book shows that the right free speech has to be defended even if the people whose right it is are not loved or admired. The book manages to provoke moral and constitutional issues related to the right of free speech.
