Literary Criticism Of The Catcher In The Rye

When the Catcher in the Rye, a book by J.D. Salinger, was published in 1951, there were mixed reactions. The book captured contemporary issues faced by teenagers and showed the world what these issues were without trying to camouflage them. However, this was not accepted or liked by the critics who felt that Salinger had penned a perverted and completely immoral story.

However, this is not the case. The story is about a teenage boy named Holden Caulfield who is like any other teenager trying to be accepted and become part of society. However, events in his life are such that he keeps having doubts and looks for ways to overcome the obstacles in his path.

Yes, the language at times is vulgar, but the book will help to strengthen moral character of young teenagers, who are faced by the same challenges that the book's protagonist was faced with. However, the setting could be different.

Readers of old ages will enjoy this book, but it will be the young readers who will get impacted the most. All because they will be able to relate to the main character and his travails. The best part about the book is that a reader will get completely absorbed into it. The reader will end up feeling as though he or she is part of the story. The brilliance of Salinger cannot be put into words.

Although the book was banned and had to face censorship and literary criticism from 1966 right up to 1975, it is definitely a literary treasure, one that even literary critics acknowledge today.
