In this book, readers find out that Voldemort has taken complete control of the Ministry of Magic. However, Harry, Ron and Hermione decide to drop out of school so that they can figure out a way to find and destroy the remaining horcruxes. The trio finds out what the Deathly Hallows are. In order to protect themselves, their friends and family, the three friends decide to be completely alone and not inform anyone of their whereabouts. While trying to find the horcruxes, the three friends find out about Professor Snape's real motive to kill Dumbledore and also about Dumbledore's past.

The book ends with the Battle of Hogwarts where Harry, Ron, Herminone, the Order of the Phoenix, and the teachers and students of Hogswart join forces to fight Voldemort and protect Hogswart. The group also has to fight the Death Eaters and many other mythical and magical creatures. In the first attack, many main characters die, and this is the time when Voldemort decides once again to kill Harry. With the intention of saving the remaining survivors, Harry surrenders to Voldemort, but the battle starts again as parents of the students, villagers from Hogsmeade and many other creatures arrive to reinforce the flailing Order of the Phoenix. At the same time, the last horcux is destroyed. It is then that Harry challenges Voldemort and offers him a chance to mend his ways. However, Voldemort ignores whatever Harry has to say and decides to kill him once in for all. But the spell cast on Harry rebounds and kills Voldemort instead.

After that there is an epilogue that lets the readers know what happened to the survivors, and what effects Voldemort and the Battle of Hogwarts had on the world of wizardry.
