Gandalf, a wizard, deceives Bilbo Baggins into throwing a party for a group of dwarves. The leader of the dwarves is named Thorin. During the course of the party, the dwarves start singing a song about how they want to get back Lonely Mountain and their treasure from Smaug, the dragon. After the song ends, Gandalf shows a map to the secret door that leads to the dragon's lair in the Lonely Mountain and informs Bilbo that he should go with the dwarves and get the treasure. However, the dwarves do not like this idea, but Bilbo, who loves his home, decides to become a party to this theft.
So, the group leaves and meets with many adventures. Gandalf saves the group from trolls during the initial stages of the expedition. After that, the group arrives in Rivendell where Elrond tells them some more secrets about the map that Gandalf had shown them. After that, the group enters the Misty Mountains where they are caught by goblins and taken deep into the ground. Bilbo gets separated from the dwarves and ends up wandering in the tunnels. There he stumbles upon a ring and also meets Gollum. With the help of the ring, which has the power to make the wearer invisible, Bilbo escapes and finds his way back to the dwarves.
After that, the group enters Mirkwood, but this time Gandalf is not with them. The wizard keeps disappearing to carry out some mysterious tasks. In the woods, Bilbo ends up saving the dwarves from giant spiders and from the dungeons of the elves, who live in the woods.
Soon the group is close to the Lonely Mountain, and they come upon the human village of Lake Town. The villagers welcome them and wish that the dwarves actually fulfill the prediction of them killing Smaug, the dragon. From here, the group goes to the Lonely Mountain in order to find the secret door to the dragon's lair. Bilbo with aid of his magic ring finds the dragon's lair, steals a cup from the lair and also ends up finding about a chink in the dragon's armor. On finding the cup missing, the dragon gets furious and attacks Lake Town believing that the humans helped in the theft. However, a thrush overhears Bilbo telling the dwarves about the dragon's weakness and reports this matter to Bard, who then kills the dragon.
With dragon dead, the dwarves stake claim on Lonely Mountain, while Bilbo ends up stealing Thorin's family's heirloom that the dragon had taken. In the mean time, the elves and the humans want to be compensated for the help they gave the group, be paid for the destruction of the Lake Town and receive a part of the treasure. However, Thorin refuses. Bilbo tries to use the heirloom to find a peaceful settlement, but Thorin is adamant. Instead Bilbo gets banished and it looks as if the war between the dwarves and the humans and elves cannot be prevented.
However, just then Gandalf makes an appearance and informs everyone that the goblins and Wargs are making their way to Lonely Mountain. So, former enemies had to join forces to fight the intruding armies of goblins and Wargs. Thorin gets mortally injured during the battle, but makes up with Bilbo. And at the end the treasure from the dragon's lair is equally divided amongst everyone. Bilbo returns to the Shire, his home town, a rich hobbit.
