The story is about Peter, an anthropomorphic rabbit, who is very naughty and disobedient. Peter does not listen to his mother, who has warned him not to venture into Mr. McGregor's garden because it was there where his father was turned into a rabbit pie. |
However, Peter does not heed his mother's warning, and ends up going into Mr. McGregor's garden to eat the juiciest and the most delicious vegetables in the whole wide world. Peter keeps eating the vegetables until he gets sick. However, as luck would have it, Mr. McGregor spies Peter in his vegetable garden, and gives him a chase. While trying to escape the clutches of Mr. McGregor, Peter not only loses his brown shoes and blue jacket, he also gets entangled in a gooseberry net.
At this point Peter believes that he too would end up in a pie like his father. However, some sparrows convince him to try and escape. In the nick of time, Peter manages to extricate himself.
After that, Peter is chased into the potting shed, but by now Mr. McGregor is tired and decides to give up trying to catch the pesky rabbit. However, Peter does not know where he is. All he knows that the garden door is shut. Finally standing on a wheelbarrow, Peter sees the gate, but he first has to get past Mr. McGregor and his cat.
Slowly Peter inches his way to the gate and then darts forward until he slides under the gate and escapes. He does not stop running until he reaches home where he tells his mother that he is not feeling well. His mother makes drink chamomile tea and puts him to bed.
Mr. McGregor finds Peter's shoes and jacket. He uses them on the scarecrow in the garden to scare away the birds.
